Temple History :

Varkala is a famous town well known for Sri Narayana Guru’s Mutt. Varkala is located at a distance of 50km North of Trivandrum, which was popularly known as ‘Dhakshina Kasi’ is a famous holy place from Centuries ago. Sree Narayana Guru was attracted to this place not only because of its natural beauty and serene surroundings but was also due to its geographical nature of hilltops and valleys. During the year 1903 Guru used to come to Varkala regularly and rest here in search of Truth. In the beginning, he sat near a jack tree. Later Guru made a temporary ‘Parnasala’ and stayed there. The Jagath Guru Sree Narayana Guru consecrated Goddess “Sree Sarada” (the Goddess of Knowledge) in this Mutt in 1912. Now 100 years have elapsed after the consecration. All pilgrims who came to Maha Samadhi will come here also to shower their worship. It is the only one consecration of “Sree Sarada” made in South India. Annual Festival of Sarada Mutt is celebrated every year during the month of April. It is from here Guru guided and led till the end of the Socio-religious rehabilitation movement.

History of Gurudevan: Sree Narayana Guru was born under the star ‘Chathayam’ in the month of ‘Chingam’ in 1856AD (1032 of the Malayalam calendar) in the village of Chempazhanthi in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala as the son of Madan Asan, a farmer, and Kutti Amma. Yet Gurudev reportedly told some of his followers that he was actually born in 1030. When his 60th birth anniversary was being celebrated 1916 he laughingly said “my 60th birthday (sashtabhdhapoorty) was quite a while ago.His parents, ‘Madan Asan’ and ‘Kutty Amma’ endearingly called him ‘Nanu’. At the age of five, he began his education in the neighboring school in the old “Gurukula” model.’Madan Asan’ was also a teacher (“Asan”) who was learned in Sanskrit and proficient in Astrology and Ayurveda.Sree Narayana Guru was born under the star ‘Chathayam’ in the month of ‘Chingam’ in 1856 AD (1032 of the Malayalam calendar) in the village of Chempazhanthi in Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala as the son of Madan Asan, a farmer, and Kutti Amma.
