Temple History :

The Thiruvannamalai is a home of big temples for lord Shiva built in the 8th century.The Shiva Linga of the temple is one of the Panchabhootha Lingas.(One of the five grand temples associated with 5 basic elements in this universe).The Shiva Linga of this temple is called “Agni lingam”.The other four are Jala linga, Vayu Linga, Akasa Linga, Bhu Linga. These Panchabhootha linga’s are associated in following areas respectively.(Arunachalam)Thiruvannamalai -Agni Linga, Thiruvanaikkaval -Jala Linga, Chidambaram- Akasa Linga, Srikalahasthi- Vayulinga, and Kanchipuram- Bhu Linga.Lord Shiva has manifested himself in the form of a massive column of fire. here the lord shiva called as Annamalayar or Arunachaleswar. His consort Parvathi is depicted as anomaly Amman.
History:


According to the mythology, there was an argument between the lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma regarding who is superior. Then the Competition between both Lords that who can find the end of the Shiva Linga. Thus Lord Shiva transformed himself into Agni Linga or “Jyothilingam”. At the same time, Lord Vishnu took the form of a Swan and started flying high to see the crown of Lord Shiva. They could not reach the end of the Lords Shiva Linga.Lord Brahma understand that it is impossible to reach the crown. Lord Brahma manipulated a flower in such a way that the flower is the witness for Lord Brahma reached the crown of Lord Shiva and took the flower from there. Lord Shiva got angry on Brahma because of his lie. Then both Lords are prayed for the cool down from his Agni form then Shiva cools down and transformed into Shivalinga.

It is said to be mountain was in the form of Agni (FIRE) during Kritayuga, emerald during Thretayuga, gold during Dwapara yuga and Rock during Kaliyuga as per the ancient Legends.The temple has 6 enclosures which include 9 gopurams. On the west-Pey Gopuram, On the North-Ammani Ammal Gopuram, and on the South-Thirumanjana Gopuram.Among these Gopuras, the main Raja gopuram is the biggest one in the East and it was built by King Vallala. The Arunachalam hill which is octagonal shaped is surrounded by a total of 8 numbers of shiva linga temples. As to Lingas. Astha Lingas Indra Linga on the East, Agni Linga on the South East, Yama Linga on the South, Niruthi Linga on the South West, Varuna Linga on the West, Vayu Linga on the Northwest, Kubera Linga on the North, and Esanya Linga on the Northeast directions.
