Lord Maha Vishnu is the presiding deity of this temple and giving darshan as Lord Pambanaiappa perumal. This is the ancient temple of this region. Lord Pambanaiappan gives a great darshan in Garbhalaya in standing position. Lord Vishnu worshiped in the shrine is referred to as Pambanaiappan – because of the lord on the banks of Pampa River. The temple is associated with Pandavas of the Mahabharata. Thiruvanvandoor Temple was constructed by Nakula, the fourth of the Pandava brothers.

The shrine is also one among the 108 Divya Deshams – Thiruvanvandoor (108 temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu as per Vaishnava tradition). Lord Pambanaiappan is also known as Annadana Prabhu. Legend has it that Sage Narada and Sage Markandeya got the vision of Lord Vishnu in the spot where the present shrine is located. There is another belief that the Lord worshiped in the shrine was originally worshiped by The great Sage Bhrigu Maharshi. The main idol of lord Pambanaiappan in the shrine is made of Krishna Shila.
