Temple History :

sri Ranganatha Swamy temple or Thiruvarangam is a Hindu temple of lord Ranganatha, a well -known form of lord Vishnu. It is located in Srirangam, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on an island in Cauvery River. Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple is an ancient and powerful temple.The Ranganathaswamy is giving darshan in 3 different Islands of the holy river Cauvery.The first Island is Srirangapatnam second one is Sivanasha Samuthiram called Mathiyarnagam.The third one is Thirunavalantheevu and called Srirangam and also called Antharnagam.This is 7 km away from Thiruchirapalli city.The Telugu relatively story of “Vipranarayana” occurred at this place.This temple is one of the Divya Tirupati Kshetras also one of Ashtaswayamsvakta kshetras.The area of this temple 6,31,000 square meters(156 Acres).The compound wall of this temple is length about 4Km and is the biggest temple in the world after the Angkor wat temple.This temple has 7 Prakarams and 21 Raja Gopuras.

The temple occupies an area of 156 acres making it the largest temple in India and one of the largest religious complexes in the world. This temple was constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture. The main entrance, the Rajagopuram rises from the base area of around 13 cents and goes up to 237 feet moving up in eleven progressively small tiers. The temple is enclosed by 7 concentric walls, 21 gopurams and 50 shrines and Ayiram kaal mandapam (hall of 1000 pillars). The people who follow other religions are allowed up to the second prakaram but not inside the gold topped sanctum sanctorum.This temple is glorified in the Thiviya Pirabandham, the early Tamil literature. The temple follows Thenkalai tradition of worship. The Vimanam is shaped like Omkara and is plated with gold. Sri Ranganathar reclines on Adisesha, the coiled serpent. Ranganayaki shrine is on the second side of the temple. The common reference to the goddess is Padi Thaanda Patni which means a lady who does not cross the boundaries of ethics.

Importance: Srirangam temple is often listed as the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. The annual 21-day festival conducted during the Tamil month of Markazi(December- January) attracts 1 million visitors. The special occasions celebrated in this temple are Vaikunta Ekadasi, Jyestabisheka, Brahmotsavam, Rathothsavam, Chitra Poornima etc. All schools of thoughts-Advaitha, Dvaitha, and Vishistadvaitha recognize the immense significance of this temple. The temple shikhara is in the shape of OM. If we want to see that outside of Garbhagudi left the side of Mandapa stands at a special place we can see that glorie of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Garbhalaya in the shape of OM. The main deity also called as Namberumal and his consort also called as Sri Andal.
