Temple History :

Ramanathaswamy temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to lord Shiva. This temple is located on Rameswaram Island in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple has the longest corridor among all the Hindu temples in India. The temple located in Rameswaram is considered as a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites, and Smarthas. The presiding deity, The Shivalinga of Ramanathaswamy is believed to have been established and worshiped by SriRama, an incarnation of the god Sri Maha Vishnu to absolve the sins created during the war at Lanka Nagara.According to the Hindu Puranas, Lord Sriram constructed Ramasethu in Tretayuga. This is also one among the 4 Chardham’s. The four Chardams are Rameswaram, Dwaraka, Puri Jagannath and, Badrinath. Lord Srirama after killing Ravana returned with his consort Goddess Sita Devi to India first stepping on Rameswaram from the country of Sri Lanka. According to the Ramayana, Rama the incarnation of God Vishnu is believed to have prayed Shiva by making a Shiva Linga here with sand, to absolve in of killing a Brahmana committed during his war against demon Ravana in Lanka Nagara. The primary deity of the temple Sri Ramanatha Swamy is in the form of Shivalinga which was installed by Sri Rama. There are also two other Shivalingams inside sanctum – one built by Goddess Sita Devi with sand beside the main deity Ramalingam and the other Shivalinga was brought by lord Hanuman from Kailash called Vishwalingam. Lord Srirama instructed that Viswalingam should be worshiped first since it was brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasa Giri in the Himalayas. There are sixty-four Tirthas in and around the island of Rameswaram. According to ‘Skanda Purana’, Twenty-four of them are most important Tirthas. Bathing in these Tirthas is a major aspect of pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is considered equivalent to penance(Tapas). 22 of the Tirthas are within the temple. The number 22 indicates the 22 arrows in Rama’s quiver. The first and major one is called ‘Agni’ Theertham, the sea(Bay of Bengal).
Importance:

The temple is one of the holiest ‘Char Dham’ sites comprising Badrinath, Puri, and Dwaraka. The important festivals of this temple are Maha Shivaratri and Adi Ramalinga Prathista. During Ardhodayam and Mahodhayam coming once in several years, Pancha Moorthy will be taken to Dhanushkodi for Theerthavari.
