Temple History :

Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple of Payyanur is believed to be constructed by Lord Parasurama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. There are references in Hindu Puranas about this temple and the temple town Payyanur. In Brahmanda Purana the temple and its town were being mentioned while Muni Gargeya explains about Kerala to the Pandavas during their Vanavasa. Lord Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is closely related with the Payyanur. Even the name of the town is originated due to the existence of the temple.

This temple was destroyed two times. Once due to a fire and then during the attack of Tipu Sultan of Mysore The temple was reconstructed in the present form in Malayalam era 967 (AD 1792). Payyanur Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple is one of the three most important ‘Maha Subrahmanya’ temples in South India. This temple is also called as ‘Palani’ of Kerala. Commonly known as Payyannur Perumal. Payyan is an appellation of Lord Subrahmanya and Ooru means the place. Thus Payyanur meaning the land of Lord Subrahmanya Swamy. The two-storied Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) is in the shape of “Gajaprishta”(back of an elephant). The main idol of Lord Subrahmanya in Garbhalaya is about 6-ft tall. There are five ‘poojas’ and three ‘Siveli’s on each day.
