Temple History :

Nanjangud is a town in Mysore District, Karnataka state. Nanjangud is on the bank of river Kabini. This town is famous for a variety of banana grown in the region. Nanjangud is one of the ancient and well-known Pilgrimage centers of Karnataka. Nanjanagud is located at a distance of 25km from Mysore. Nanjanagud means one who has consumed poison and the legend relates to the churing of the ocean when Shiva had to consume Halahalam in his “Trought”(Kantham).

The temple of Sri Nanjundeswra Swamy is well known and the most powerful temple in Karnataka. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity in this temple and giving darshan as Sri Nanjundeswara Swamy. It is believed that lord here is curing of all kind of diseases. Devotees from all over the Karnataka arrive here and worships lord with several pujas and sevas for the cure of diseases. A Muslim king “Tippusulthan” gifted an emerald Linga and a valuable emerald necklace as votive offerings for having cured his favourate elephant of an eye disease. So this area of soil and water is famous for curative properties and Nanjundeswara Swamy worshipped as Bhavaroga Vaidyam.

In puranas, this area refered as Garalapuri. Nanjanugud has been praised as a holy place sanctified by Parasurama and Gauthama. Parasurama prayed for the grace of Srikanteswara to explate himself of the sin beheading his mother “Renuka”. This temple is biggest temple in Karnataka. There are largest number of sculptures relating to Shiva and various Manifestations, several forms of Subrahmanya, Saptha Matrukas. Near to the Nanjangud temple, there are Parasurama Kshetra, Gauthama Kshetram, Ganapathi, Dattatreya, Raghavendra Swamy mutt and other temples are on the banks of Kapila river.
