Temple History :

Sri Male Mahadeshwara Temple is an ancient and sacred temple of belongs to Chamaraja Nagar District, Karnataka State in India. It is a very popular & holy ancient temple, surrounded by 77 hills in the Eastern Ghats. The Mahadeshwara Temple at Male Mahadeshwara Hill was built by Junje Gowda Rich Kuruba Gowda Landlord. The History of the Shrine Shri Male Mahadeshwara Swamy Temple has been extremely holy religious Institution and is famous from the time immemorial.

The Lord Sri Mahadeshwara is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is a very famous Shaiva pilgrim center. The temple is located on the top of a hill. The height of the hill is about 3000 feet from the sea level. As mentioned in Janapada Mahakavya Shri Male Mahadeshwara is the son of the couple of Shri Chandrashekar Murthy and Smt. Uttarajamma and has descended to earth and has for the fist time seen near Shri Shailadha Mallikarjuna Linga, nearly 600 years ago; has come through Sutturu, Kunduru, then to the centre of Seven Hills; this place being felt to be comfortable desired to stay in the place of temple; and incarnation of Lord Eswara and kept tiger as his Vehicle. Traveled through the hills and the surroundings area, spent his childhood, youth and aged life in between the hills and on the basis of his yogi powers have displayed his various miracles.

He has transformed the life of the people belonging to Beda and Soliga Community and has solved the problems through his yogic powers and has converted the people by Lingadharana as Veerashaiva philosophy and he has placed the people belonging to Bedagampana alone should be allowed to perform puja and others to do ceremonies and religious activities and elevated from human beings to that of devata and settled in the hearts of his devotees by accepting the offering of puja heartly and the persons staying in between the hills Shri Male Mahadeshwara Swamy.

According to tradition, there are seven peaks identified in the legend, which is as follows; Anumale, Jenumale, Kanumale, Pachchemale, Pavalamale, Ponnachimale, and Kongumale. These seven peaks together form theM.M.Betta. It is said that the saint Lord Mahadeshwara established a Mutt here for looking after the religious and cultural affairs of the people of this area. It is also said that, through his miracles, he enlightened and uplifted the hill tribes & made them his disciples. The temple was under the control & management of Sri Salur Mutt established by the Lord Mahadeshwara himself.
