Temple History :

Kollur Sri Mookambika Temple is one of the most hallowed shrines for Hindus in India. It is one of the holiest Siddhi Kshetras (abode of mystic powers) of the world today. The temple of Sri Mookambika was the most famous and well-known temple all over India. Kollur is a temple city which is located in Kundapur Taluk of Udupi district. The temple is located between the thickest forest. The temple architecture is quite different from other temples of Karnataka. Goddess Aadi shakti is giving darshan as Sri Mookambika Ammavaru here. The great darshan of Sri Mookambika Ammavaru makes one happy and peace. Once while Sri Sri Sri Aadishankaracharya on the way from Kasi Kshetra installed Srichakra at this temple.

The history of Kollur Mookambika temple states that there lived a demon named Kaumasura who was unleashing a reign of terror upon all the gods with his special power given by Lord Shiva. When all the gods were trying their best to stay away from his vicinity, Guru Shukracharya brings good news to the gods that this demon would face death by a woman, that is Parvathi Devi. Knowing this Kaumasura undertakes severe penance, Lord Shiva asks the demon to ask for the boon, sensing grave danger if he is offered the boon, this goddess of speech makes this demon dumb. Hence this Kaumasura came to be known as Mookasura (mooka means to be dumb). Thereafter Devi mobilized all the powers of the gods and then this demon was killed by Kollur Devi Parvathi. She was henceforth called Mookambikai. This place where Devi killed Mookasura is known as Marana Katte. The Goddess Mookambika is in the form of Jyotir-Linga incorporating both Shiva and Shakthi. The Panchaloha image (five elements mixed metal) of the Goddess on Shree Chakra is stated to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya during his visit to this place. There is an exquisite sculpture of Panchamukha Ganesha.

As we move in a Pradakshina at the outer enclosure, we first find Subrahmanya Swamy, then Saraswathi and then Pranalingeshwara,i.e the deity of Mukhya Prana (with a bell on the tail) installed by Vadiraja, Vishnu Brindavana, a beautiful idol of Gopalakrishna within the Brindaana (Considered as Upa-Pradhana Devatha), the platform for Tulasi and then the temple of Veerabhadraswamy who is the presiding deity. Entrance to this shrine being made of wood, we may see an excellent image, of Nrutya Ganapathi, right at the center of the arch. It is said that the deity of Mukhya Prana has been situated right opposite the Veerabhadraswamy shrine with a view to balancing its frightful appearance.
