Temple History :

Varadaraja Perumal temple or Hastagiri or Attiyuran is a Hindu temple dedicated to lord Vishnu located at the holy city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India.This temple is also called as Vishnu Kanchi. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu believed to have been visited by the 12 poet saints or Alwars.Four worship services are offered here by priests who are said to be descendants of Yagna Valkyar. The annual Brahmotsavam is celebrated in the month of Vaikasi, while the Adhyayanotsavam is celebrated in the month of Margazhi. The Garuda Sevai and the chariot festival during the Brahmotsavam draw thousands of pilgrims. During Chitra Pournami and Pongal, the deity is taken out to neighboring areas as Ustav.One of the greatest Vaishnava saints, Sri Ramanuja is believed to have resided in the temple. In one of the upper chambers is a giant gold lizard makeshift ladders permit devotees to touch the lizard. The legend prince of Ayodhya and his wife were turned to lizards by a curse. On praying at this temple, they regained their human form. People who suffer from skin ailments or those who have killed animals like lizards or snakes should offer worship at this temple for Prayaschittam.

It is located in Kanchipuram known as the Vishnu Kanchi that is a home for many famous Vishnu temples. The temple along with Ekambareswar temple and Kamakshi Amman temple in Kanchipuram is popularly known as Mumurtivasam. Among the Divya Desams, Kanchipuram Varadaraja perumal temple is also known as the “PerumalKoil”. This is one of the most sacred places for the Vaishnavites. There is another famous temple of Varadarajaswamy in Kurma, of Palamaner mandal in Chittur district of Andhra Pradesh, called the Kurma Varadarajaswamy temple.
