Temple History :

Kanchi Sri Kailasanathar temple is located on the banks of the Vedavathi River at the western limits of Kanchipuram.This temple faces towards east. It is widely known as the Shiva Kanchi. Kanchi is at a distance of 75 km from Chennai city, which is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, India.Lord Shiva is the principle deity in this temple giving darshan as Sri Kailasanathar. A huge kneeling Nandi is seen in the entrance of the temple.The temple is aptly located in a rustic suburb away from the hustle-bustle of the city. The temple has followed Dravidian architecture. Beautiful paintings and sculptures of lord Shiva are seen on the walls of the temple. The special feature of this temple is the 16 sided Shiva Lingam at the main shrine.Amongst all the ancient temples of Tamil Nadu, Kailasnathar temple in Kanchipuram is the oldest one.This temple was built during 685 A.D. to 705 A.D. The Pallava ruler, Rajasimha started the construction of the temple but it was completed by his son Mahendra Varma Pallava.According to the popular belief, the temple served as a shelter to the king at the time of battles.

It is said that Romasa Maharishi did penance for lord Shiva to attain salvation(Mukti) as suggested by his Guru Agastya Mahamuni. By Impressed with Maharshi’s penance, lord Shiva appeared before him and advised him to take the circle passage in the main shrine to attain salvation.More than 58 small shrines are enshrined in this temple complex. Kailasanathar temple is one of the 9 Shaiva kshetras. These 9 kshetras represent 9 planets. Kailasanathar temple represents planet Ketu.It is believed that one who worships lord Shiva here will be relieved from Ketu problems.Thousands of devotees visit the temple at the time of Mahashivratri when you would even have to wait for hours in long queues for your turn.

Importance: One of the specialties of this temple is the sandstone compound. This temple is very much famous for outstanding limestone art and sculpture. Within the walls of the main shrine, there is Padabhanda Adhisthana with very elegantly carved images of gods with a sculpted Nandi. The west facing hall has sculptures of Shiva in the form of Sandhya Tandavamurthi and Urdhava Tandavamurti. The other notable temples in Kanchipuram are Ekambaranatha, Kachapeshwarar, Kamakshi Amman, Kumara Kottam temple and Varadaraja perumal.
