Temple History :

Sree Mariamman Bhagawathy temple is situated over centuries at Kallekulangara in Akathethara Panchayat of Palakkad Taluk. This sacred temple is located about 1 km away from Palakkad Junction railway station in northern direction. Devotees can alight at Kallekulangara bus stop of Olavakkot – dhoni route. They can also reach the temple alighting at Hemambika Temple bus stop of Olavakkot- Malampuzha route. The main consecration is of Sree Mariamman Goddess. Other sub deities are Ganapathy, Pechiamma, Sankilidevan and Karuppaswamy. We worship the super power of creation and destruction of nature over years in the form of Mother and in the form of Sakthi(Strength). We can see the communion of these two forms in Sree Mariamman Bhagawathy of Kallekulangara.

The Legend says that there are as many as 30 families, who follow the Tamil culture and rite in Kallekulangara area. One of their predecessors was a devotee of Sree Mariamma Bhagawathy of Samayapuram in Trichinapally. He visited Samayapuram every year and worshiped the goddess. He felt sad when he attained senility as he was not able to visit the goddess every year. He sincerely prayed to the goddess. On that day, he dreamt the goddess and during which the goddess blessed him and advised him not to visit Samayapuram and also promised that the goddess would appear near him. The goddess also suggested him to be present at the temple site with a spade in tidy appearance after ablution and dig the earth. It was further exhorted that the milk would ooze out and he could plant a sapling at the site and offer prayer in the presence of a lamp. Accordingly, he planted a stem of Arali(a tree) there on seeing the presence of milk and started worshipping the deity.

The site of the temple belonged to the Emoor Bhagavathy(Hemambika) Temple which was owned by the king of Palakkattuserry. The man briefed the king the entire story that he gathered from the dream and the king, in turn, allotted him 25 cent land and permitted him to worship the goddess by constructing a temple. Moreover, the king ordered the Emoor Bhagawathy Devaswom to provide provisions and a small amount for the rituals required in connection with the first and last day of the temple festival. The King also passed orders to provide elephants and decorating materials to the temple free of cost. These customs are still followed by the kind Devaswom authorities in letter and spirit.
