Temple History :

Sree Subrahmanya Swamy temple at Haripad is one among the oldest temples of Kerala state. The temple is one of the oldest and most important temple devoted to Lord Subrahmanya Swamy. This temple is popularly known as Dakshina Palani ( Palani of south), the temple continues to attract millions of devotees every year. It is believed that the temple was established even before the advent of ‘Kaliyuga’. This holy shrine is built in the ancient Kerala style architecture. The Subrahmanya Swamy idol with four arms is the biggest of its kind designed after the sculptural pattern of the Buddhist era. The holy gold covered flagstaff is biggest in its kind. The lord of eighteen zones (Karas), people worship lord Subrahmanya (Harigeetha Pureshan) of Haripad irrespective of cast, creed and religion.. This temple enshrines an imposing idol of Subrahmanya said to have been worshipped by Lord Parasurama. The temple has unique rituals and ceremonies that attracts daily a number of devotees come to this holy shrine.

The four-handed idol(Chathurbahu) which had been used by Parashuram for poojas, was deposited in water after Kerala’s origin which was discovered in Kandanalloor in Govindamuttom Backwaters(Kayal). This happened because all the landlords at the sametime got the information regarding the existence of idol in their dreams.Following that , landlords together with the people came to that place and found the idol at the place where formed Whirlpool and Pooja flowers and took that idol to a ferry near by(Nallupura kadavu). The idol for installation in Haripad Sree Subramaniya Swami Temple was brought throughwaterways. For the memory of that ,they celebrate Vigraha Labdhi Jalolsavam. This is carried out for three days after Thiruvonamin Payipattu backwaters(Aaru). The people who are participating for this celebration come in groups singing Vanjipattu, offering Vazhipadu on Thiruvonam day then only the Aavani festival Aarattu Ezhunnellathu in Chinga masam will start.

History: Around a century back, making all the devotees sad the temple caught fire. Before catching the fire Malayalam year(Kolla Varsham) 1067 first installed the Golden Flag Pole. In order to protect it from the fire caught in 1096 it was cut down and kept in a safe place. The Koothambalam which is existing now is saved from the fire by the people. In that fire the temple was destroyed completely. The temple which is seen now was built during the period of King Sree Chithira Thirunal Rama Varma. Edavakkattu architects(Shilpi’s) rebuilt the temple like now. The Golden Flag which was cut off in 1096 was reinstated 58 years back from now. The Keezhthya Kovil which is situated at the south of the temple plays a very important role in the temple history. Lord Murugan’s Bihanded(Dwi bahu) idol is installed here. The Keezhthya temple is older than Sree Subramanya Swmy Temple.
