Temple History :
Harihara is a city located in Davanagere district, Karnataka state. Harihara is situated on the bank of the river Tungabhadra. The word Harihara is a combination of two gods Lord Vishnu(Hari) and Lord Siva(Hara). There is a story of the formation of the Harihara avatar by lord shiva and Vishnu. In the olden yugas, The place Harihara is known as Gruharanya. There is a demon named Gruhasura living in the Gruharanya area (Present Harihara). That Demon has a boon that no Human, God or any Rakshasa can Kill him. By this boon, he started harassing and killing the people. So lord shiva and Vishnu are combined to form a new avatar named Harihara and killed demon Gruhasura. So the place Gruharanya came to called as Harihara.
The Hariharswara Swamy temple built in 1223-1224 by Pallava, a commander and minister of Hoysala empire king veera Narasimha-2 in Harihara. This wonderful temple is the abode of Lord Vishnu. The temple is also known as God’s Own House. The hills of Harihareshwar, Pushpadri, Harishinachal and Bramhadri surround this place. Harihareshwar also boasts of clean and pristine sandy beaches. The place is also gaining importance as a popular tourist destination. The main deity Harihara is a union of Gods Vishnu and Shiva. The attributes of Shiva are visible in the right hand and Vishnu in the left hand. The Harihareshwara temple is rightly described as the Kashi of South India. The ‘Harihar’ or “Pushpadri’ hill is situated on the sea shore.
