Temple History :

The Chengannur Mahadevar Temple is one of the oldest and famous temples, which is at a distance of 5 km south of Thiruvalla, situated in Alappuzha district, Kerala. It is a sprawling temple complex with a circular Sanctum(Garbhalaya). Lord Shiva and Parvathi Devi are the main deities of this temple. Differing from other temples, there are two main Shrines in this temple. Lord Shiva facing East and Parvathi Devi facing West. The main shrine is a conical copper plated one. Goddess Parvathi Devi’s main idol is made of Panchaloha. The Shiva Lingam in Garbhalaya is covered with a gold plate bearing an image of Ardhanareeswara. Also, there are shrines for Lord Ganapathi, Shasta (Lord Ayyappa), Lord Chandikeswaran, Lord Neelagrivan, Goddess Ganga, and The serpent Nagaraja.

The Mahadeva temple was constructed centuries back in accordance with an architectural design evolved by the famous Perunthachan. During the 18th century, the temple complex was damaged by fire and later it was renovated. The structure of the Kuthambalam originally constructed by Perunthachan was in such a manner that the shadow of the performer would not fall on the stage if all the lamps were lit on each of the posts of the Kuthambalam. The temple was completely built of great wooden work with amazing architecture. Compared to other temples, this temple has a peculiarity of its own, quite distinct from other temples. The interesting belief and festival of this Temple are Triputharattu which is considered as a symbol of fertility. This festival is connected with a menstruation ceremony, which is observed periodically in the temple. That is why this temple is also considered as Shakthi Peetam.

‘Thriputharattu’ is an extraordinary and significant festival that take place in the Chengannur Mahadeva temple. It is to do with the menstruation cycle of Chengannur Bhagavati. On finding signs of menstruation on the garment of Devi, the apparel is sent to the Thazhaman and Vanghipuzha Maddam (the traditional residence of the temple tantri) to be confirmed by the senior women. On confirmation of menstruation, Devi’s shrine is closed and worship is offered to the image used during processions. On the fourth day, the idol of Devi is taken to a nearby river where ‘Arrattu’ (washing of the idol) is conducted. The idol is then taken in procession to the temple on an elephant. On reaching the main entrance, Lord Shiva waits there in a procession. The deities then circumambulate the temple thrice and Lord Shiva enters the temple through the eastern side while Devi enters through the western side. The Udayada (Devi’s garment) is then made available for the public to buy and worship at their homes.
