Temple History :

This is one of the Tourist places in Karnataka. Festivals are not celebrated here. Badami cave temples are a complex of four Hindu cave temples, Jain and possibly Buddhist cave temples located in Badami, A town in Bagalkot district in northern part of Karnataka, India. These caves are the resemblances of India Rock-Cut architecture especially the Chalukyan architecture of 6th century. It was earlier known as Vaatapi Badami. The caves of Badami and Aihole have transformed the Malaprabha valley into a cradle of temple architecture.

Caves 1-4 are of sandstone formation. In cave 1 a prominent carving is of the Tandava the dancing Shiva as Nataraja. Lord Shiva has 18 arms in a form that expresses the dance patterns which symbolize the cosmic wheel. While most of the arms express mudras, some of the arms hold objects such as drums, a trident, and an ax. Some have serpents coiled around them. Shiva has his son Ganesha and the bull Nandi by his side. Cave -2 is most similar to cave 1 in its dimensions which features the relief of lord Vishnu as Trivikrama. Cave-2 is reached by climbing 64 steps from the first cave. The lord has his one foot on earth and the other directed towards the north. The doorway is framed by pilasters carrying an entablature with three embellished with Gavaksha ornament. The largest cave is cave-3 featuring Vishnu related mythology. Cave -4 is dedicated to revered figures of Jainism. Cave-5 may be Buddhist cave. Another new cave was discovered in 2015 about 500 meters from the 4 main caves and consists of 27 Hindu carvings.

The four caves include an entrance with a Mukha mandapa supported by the stone columns and brackets. The architecture includes structures built in Nagara and Dravidian styles. The fifth cave can only be entered by bending on the rest four caves.
